Designer Profile – Emma Charlotte Finley

Never without with a sketchbook in hand to capture any inspiration in day to day life, Emma graduated from (BA) Hons Fashion Studies and flew across the other side of the world, interning for Australian fashion designer, Kirrily Johnston. With a love for Art and design and a passion for fashion, she climbed her way up as a fashion assistant and then to a business manager within the fashion marketing company, JHFM. However success doesn’t stop there for Emma as she dreams of her designs to be available on the high street, spurring on her motivation to become a successful designer.

Designer Profile – Rebecca Giddings

Rebecca Giddings graduated from Bournemouth University in 2010 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Fashion and Textiles. Her interest in fashion was sparked at her cousin’s military wedding when she was a teenager. The groom wore a bespoke military uniform which generated more interest from the guests than the wedding dress.  Inspired and determined to learn more about design, Rebecca enrolled on a fashion and textiles course.  Now 5 years later she has gained a work placement at Norton and Sons’ Saville Row. She has also won an invitation to Drapers Record, featured in the Next Generation 2011 event (London) and showcased at four graduate fashion shows including Graduate Fashion Week 2010. Rebecca will be showcasing her Spring/Summer 2012 collection at the Midlands Fashion Designer Awards. The collection focuses on Spring/Summer layering where outfits can be customised depending on the season and personal style. Rebecca is currently a freelance designer and volunteer pattern cutter, creating seasonal collections for a boutique in Tettenhall and also helps with the boutique owners own self titled collections.

Designer Profile – Rosie Legg

Nottingham Trent University graduate Rosie Legg has been selected to showcase her collection at this year’s Midlands Fashion Designer Awards.  Rosie graduated in 2009 with 1st Class BA (Hons) degree in Fashion Design and progressed onto the MA Fashion Design receiving the Paul Smith Scholarship to study in Tokyo for two months. She graduated from Masters course with distinction in 2010.  Rosie takes inspiration her travels and her surroundings. Through her recent travels Rosie has explored and created a signature hybrid design philosophy, combining Japanese ideas and inspirations such as origami folding techniques with bold digital prints.  Folds and prints are significant features in her work, creating a distinctive clashing aesthetic.  As a designer Rosie likes to push traditional and modern elements to create garments with unique sophistication with original ‘chic’.

Rosie has undertaken work placement roles at Paul Smith, Burton and Freda womenswear. Rosie is currently working as a freelance print designer and looking to launch her career in womenswear design.

Designer Profile – Annabel Handley

Annabel takes inspiration from designers who focus on innovative silhoutee such as Hussein Chalayan.  She is also influenced by sophisticated and professional womenswear designers Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen and Calos Miele.

Annabel’s collection is based on New York architecture, inspired by negative space and intersecting grid lines. Her designs include a mid length cape dress with a full three-piece hood made from dark blue/black polyester print sourced in Paris, lined with 100% mauve silk.  Also included is a full length, fitted jumpsuit produced from dark silver and black knit and a floor length dress flared out to produce a minor fishtail in contrasting fabric. Annabel will be showcasing her collection alongside 28 other finalists at these year’s Midlands Fashion Designer Awards.

Designer Profile – Charmaine Bould

Shropshire based, ready to wear designer Charmaine Bould explained to the organiser of the Midlands Fashion Designer awards that her“interest in fashion is that it is a form of expression, a way to be a ‘walking piece of art”.  She loves to experiment with new techniques and ideas and to be able to put them to a practical use.  Inspired by Ice Cream, her Spring/Summer collection is named ‘Sweet’. Noting on the nature of ice cream, particularly how it melts and the colours run together lead her towards using soft layers and a marbling technique. Sugar sprinkles and pretties inspired the fringing and beading, layered on top of the melted ice cream.  Her collection consists layered fringed tops, hand marbled layered ruffled, embellished with bead and embroidered details.

Designer Profile – Alexandra Hughes (Lingerie wear)

Alexandra is fascinated by the use of fashion and textiles in embellished surface detailing and colour. She is interested in how these details can change the impact and mood of an outfit dramatically. Her collection is aimed at the luxury ready to wear market such as Bordelle and Myla which are comparable target markets.  Her customers would need a high disposable income; enjoying spending her money on luxuries, appreciating quality fabrics and cuts. Alexandra is looking forward to show her collection at the Midlands Fashion Designer Awards 2011.

Designer Profile: Designer Profile – ‘Structured temptation by’ Jade Hope (Lingerie wear)

Jade Hope’s passion for lingerie design grew while studying contour and fashion design at De Montfort University. Jade feels her strongest points are within designing, pattern cutting and creating lingerie.  Jade takes her inspiration from observing the structure of underwear,  manipulating and changing it to create different styles and shapes to create dramatic looks to make a statement.  “Seeing my completed collections really motivates me to want to complete more ranges and to keep developing my skills”. Her plan for the future is to develop her underwear collection into a successful brand selling to boutiques and leading stores.

Designer Profile – Emma Curtis

With a natural flare for drawing and sketching from a very young age, Emma is passionate about discovering new techniques, fabrics and shapes when exploring new projects. Her work focuses mainly around body shapes, particularly the differences in the female figure distorting it into something far from perfection. 

Emma’s fashion illustrations are a great passion of hers and her finished garments have to capture the same feel and intensity as her illustrations do.  Skilled in pattern cutting, illustration, leather work, machinist, dresser, and as a project lead, Emma is looking forward to seeing her collections on the catwalk at the Midlands Fashion Designer Awards.

Designer Profile: Ryan Kailla

Ryan has always had an interest in fashion from a young age and most significantly remembering when he used to assist his mother in the wearing of her sari. With a passion for both fashion and illustration and especially when the two marry together.

His interests in fashion are varied, enjoying designs from all eras but also regularly researches the latest collections with personal favouries including Alexander McQueen and Thierrey Hugler. With an interest for shapes, structure and how the garments move on the body. Ryan describes his personal style as elegance with a hint of attitude.

Designer Profile: Leanne Fitchett

Leanne is currently studying an Art Foundation degree and is due to start a degree in Costume design at Bournemouth university in September. Her collection for the Midlands Fashion Designer Awards consists of a floor length chiffon evening dress, gathered skirt attached to a hand pleated bodice with a pleated waistband.  She will also be showcasing a tailored taffeta jacket together with gathered chiffon trousers, detailed with gems and starbursts beads. The final piece is a hand gathered bodice with lined chiffon halter neck with starburst beading on three layered chiffon skirt with wired hems.
