Designer Profile – Joanne Crossdale

Joanne Crosedale graduated with a 2:1 in Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles and became a finalist of the MYFDA with her ‘Inspired by Nature collection in the ‘Ready to Wear’ category. Joanne sees this experience as a “great chance to be recognised as a talented designer and meet people in the industry.” Joanne’s well thought out collection is “unique and innovative as it is all knitted, showing how versatile knit wear can be”.

She took an unusual approach to researching her theme of nature by the gradients and textures of fungi, tree bark, flowers and spiders webs and then conveyed these through various stitches and yarns. She has not only researched her muse but also taken into the consideration the current economic market which suggests customers are more likely to purchase “key pieces” which they can “mix-and-match.”
Joanne is fascinated by designers who “push boundaries” such as Sandra Backlund and the “fabric manipulation and draping techniques” of Junya Watanabe. Joanne’s own motivation comes from being able to see her own designs develop from sketches to finished garments, which is something she finds very rewarding and satisfying.
